Weddings at Spencer House

A Private London Wedding in the Heart of St James’s

For couples dreaming of a destination wedding in London that feels unmistakably British, deeply private and rich in history, Spencer House is rather exceptional.

Hidden behind an elegant façade in St James’s and overlooking Green Park, this magnificent eighteenth-century aristocratic townhouse offers something increasingly rare in central London: grandeur with genuine intimacy. Built for the First Lord and Lady Spencer in the eighteenth century, the House was created for entertaining and more than 250 years later, that heritage can still be felt throughout its beautifully restored State Rooms.

For American couples considering a destination wedding in England, Spencer House offers the opportunity to invite guests into one of London’s most remarkable private historic houses and with only a limited number of weddings hosted here, there remains a genuine sense of privilege in celebrating within the House.

WHY CHOOSE SPENCER HOUSE FOR YOUR LONDON WEDDING?

There are grand London venues and there are private London venues, and remarkably, Spencer House manages to be both.

Unlike a traditional hotel ballroom, guests are welcomed into a sequence of interconnected State Rooms originally conceived for entertaining London society, allowing your wedding to unfold gradually through the House, creating distinct chapters rather than asking one room to perform every function.

Guests might arrive for champagne before moving through the State Rooms for the ceremony and dinner, later discovering another part of the House for dancing and entertainment. During the summer months, the private terrace overlooking Green Park introduces an unexpected outdoor element in the very centre of London.

The architecture is already extraordinary, which means the most successful designs respond to the building rather than attempting to transform it.

OUR PERSPECTIVE AS A SPENCER HOUSE WEDDING PLANNER

As a recommended planner at Spencer House, our appreciation of the House goes considerably beyond its photographs.

What makes Spencer House particularly compelling is not simply the beauty of an individual room but the way the House works as a whole. When planning here, we consider how guests experience the house from arrival onwards, where the atmosphere should change and how catering, entertainment, florals, lighting and production can complement the architecture without overwhelming it.

Spencer House was created as a London home in which to receive guests and a beautifully hosted wedding still feels entirely at home within it. For us, the most successful celebrations respect that heritage while introducing enough personality to make the experience unmistakably your own

WEDDING SPACES AND CAPACITY AT SPENCER HOUSE

Exclusive hire provides access to the magnificent suite of State Rooms, each offering a different character and purpose.

The Great Room is the largest and most imposing space and provides a beautiful setting for larger ceremonies and wedding dinners. Adjoining it, Lady Spencer’s Room offers a more intimate counterpoint and can be incorporated into dinner for larger guest numbers.

The distinctive Palm Room, with its gilded palm columns and French doors opening onto the terrace during summer, works beautifully for cocktails, entertainment or a transition between different stages of the celebration. The private terrace and garden beyond are particularly special for reception drinks, offering a rare sense of seclusion overlooking Green Park.

Together, these spaces allow us to choreograph the guest journey through the House and let the atmosphere evolve naturally as the celebration progresses.

WHO IS A SPENCER HOUSE WEDDING BEST SUITED TO?

We particularly recommend Spencer House to couples who appreciate history, architecture and provenance but want their celebration to retain warmth and personality.

It suits those who would rather host guests within an extraordinary private house than a conventional ballroom and those who understand that luxury does not always require adding more. For an American couple imagining a black tie wedding in London, it offers the formality and heritage of a great British house alongside an atmosphere that remains remarkably intimate.

PLANNING FROM THE USA

For American couples planning a destination wedding in London, having an experienced UK wedding planner on the ground removes much of the complexity created by distance.

We coordinate site visits around your trips to London, manage venue and supplier relationships, oversee contracts and production requirements and bring together a trusted creative team who understand both the venue and the level of hospitality expected. When you cannot be in England, we can attend meetings and site visits on your behalf and translate the practical differences between planning a wedding in the US and the UK.

Spencer House is also exceptionally placed for a multi-day London wedding weekend. St James’s, Mayfair, Buckingham Palace and many of the capital’s finest hotels, restaurants and private members’ clubs are close by, allowing us to create a welcome celebration, wedding day and farewell gathering that introduce your guests to London without spending the weekend continually travelling across the city.
